The Five Elements!

As super-modern, high-tech beings of the human sort, we often forget that we are made up of the most basic building blocks of the universe, the elements. The same as plants and animals, 99% of our body is made up of a combination of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. The idea that we are made up of the elements of nature is quite old, dating back at least 3000 years.

According to Chinese Medicine there are five basic elements, no more and no less, that make up humans, animals, plants, seasons, and planets; Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. Each element is a description of a movement of Qi or energy.

In Nature these elements flow in the cycles of seasons. Summer (fire), the sneaky Late-Summer (earth), Autumn (metal), Winter (water), and Spring (wood). Thinking about each season will give you an idea of what the energetic movement of each element is like.

We possess this seasonal flow as well. Not only are our bodies born from these elements, but our bodies, minds, emotions and spirits are being continually created with them in every moment. According to western medicine, every cell in our body, including our brain cells, are constantly dying and being rebourn. In fact, you have a completely new body every year. Just ask your doctor!

In Five Element Medicine we work to balance the flow of seasons, of elements, within. When a symptom shows up in your body, it is a signal, a call, a "yoo-hoo", that there is an inbalance in this flow. So how do the elements show up in us?
