Dear Clients and Friends,

Full, open blossoms scatter the fields, sipping the warm sunshine, radiating their essence, awaiting the opportunity to mingle with the bees and spread their seed. This is Summer! Do you feel it?!

Summer radiates with the energy of the fire element. The energy that is about peaking, expanding to the maximum possible fullness. The summer days are the longest, brightest and warmest. The sun shines its strongest and life is at full steam. This is the essence of the Summertime energy, an energy that exists both outside in nature and within each of us.

In nature the woods are filled with the height of activity. The plants have reached their full maturity. Nature is open, expansive, connected, and aglow. The Summer is the time of year when life reaches its peak. Animals, birds, bees, & bugs are all out and about, buzzing, darting, chatting singing, playing & doing life at 'full throttle'.

In Five Element Acupuncture we understand that we are part of nature. That the Summertime exists not only 'out there' but within us as well. This is a time for us to live our fullness. The hard work of the springtime has paid off and we expand to our height, to our maximum possible intensity. It is the time for us to be in movement, to play, to dance, to sing, to chat, to focus on our relationships with loved ones, to swing our arms around in circles, laughing and basking in the fire of the sun. Just as the blossoming flowers give off their fullness to the world, we glow with our essence, our fullness, our possibilities. When we allow this aspect to radiate through us, we create the possibility of a bountiful harvest, and lavishing in the fruits of our labor, play and relationships when Late Summer comes.

So how does Summer show up in people? In our body, the Heart is responsible for our radiance and circulation of Qi energy, blood and warmth. When out of balance physical symptoms may show up as palpitations, cold hands and feet, insomnia, stuttering, night sweats, mouth sores, and fatigue.

In our Mind/Spirit the Summer may show up as need to have fun, express joy, or have an intimate relationship. It is the part of us that is all about connecting to people in meaningful ways, making friends, sharing our heart, giving and receiving love and expressing compassion.

When in balance, the fire energy radiates through us bringing joy, warmth and love into our lives. Spirit Gate (an acupuncture point on the heart meridian) speaks to the connection of the radiance of our heart and our spirit. If the Summer energy within us is not balanced, we may find mind/spirit symptoms such as anxiety, depression, lack of joy, poor concentration, restlessness, the inability to follow through, to an inability to have meaningful relationships.

A goal of Five Element Acupuncture is to bring the Summer energy (along with the energy of the other seasons) into balance. There is an understanding that our symptoms are a signal of this underlying imbalance and when we do bring the seasons into harmony, through treatment or lifestyle changes, our symptoms fade away.

This is a great time for an Acupuncture session to help bring out joy, playfulness, intimacy and all the gifts of the Summer in you! Call (610) 203-3338 for an appointment if you don't already have one scheduled.

5 Practices for Cultivating the Gifts of Summer
  • Go dancing! Whether you have a rhythm or think you don't, get up and move to some music. This is best done with lots of other fun people around. Let yourself go, close your eyes and move! This is one of the best therapies to increase the joy in your life! You can do it NOW and its very inexpensive! So go for it!
  • Make a play date with a friend. It doesn't matter if you are 5, 85 or the CEO of a fortune 500 company, go out and play!* Some play ideas: go frolic in a field, fly a kite, draw pictures with crayons, or watch a really fun movie! Make a list of play ideas for yourself and friends and get to it! *note: silliness is essential!
  • Make a new friend! Friends can be found all around! Go and make that extra effort, meet a new person, strike up a conversation, and say hi, would you like to draw pictures with crayons with me! Who can turn that down?!
  • Meditate with your hands over your heart for 11 minutes.
  • Commit to doing a day or hour of service for you community. Help clean up the streets or a park or read a book to a child. Volunteer your time helping with something or someone that brings you fun and joy!

Easy Yoga for Summer

Yoga is a superb practice to increase the radiance of our heart and build summertime energy.*

Try the following asana (posture) whenever you feel unhappy, closed, or angry. It is simple, can be done anytime, anywhere, and beautifully opens the heart!

  • Come sitting in your chair or on the floor.
  • With closed eyes move you focus to the space between & just above your eyebrows.
  • Begin long deep breathing.
  • Make a wrist lock behind the back with the hands touching the spine and try to bring elbows together. Pull!
  • Arch the spine forward and, with the head level to the ground, bring your chin slightly back toward your spine. This aligns the vertebrae of the neck.
  • Continue for 1-3 minutes.

This asana raises energy up the spine, opens the heart and elevates you!

*Please check with your doctor before starting any new exercise.
